Along Old Redwood Highway

Along Old Redwood Highway was painted plein air on a late, warm autumn afternoon. I enjoy painting at this time of day, yet the race is on to get a painting done quickly. Sometimes I come back two or three times to capture the same light, but in the fall the weather may not be the same. This painting just came together, so I was able to complete it in one trip.

I painted this painting just a few years before my mother passed, and I was very aware of the fall season in her life. For me it was a time of a great dichotomy of emotions. Her life was coming to a close, while my son had just budded from little boy to a boy. She was 100% dependent on me, while my son was growing in his independence. The road led me to a place of hopeful and peaceful thoughts that this beautiful, but exhausting season will someday end and I will have no regrets.
